Riding Club Teams of Three – Hickstead – July 2008

We were represented at Hickstead by Carole Cook on Finnigan (85cm), Natalie Owen (95cm) and Marisa Turner on Danny’s Limerick (1.05cm) It was a long but enjoyable day although Marisa’s horse decided it to cool down a bit by rolling in the sand – with Marisa still on top! Both Carole and Marisa had a pole down with Natalie jumping clear. Bradbourne finished on 8 faults which put them 35th out of 83 teams. Well done to you all.

Senior Novice and Style Show Jumping – Felbridge – July 2008
This was a very popular competition with Bradbourne entering three teams for the Novice Show Jumping and also a team for the Senior Style jumping.
It was an absolutely awful day and rained heavily for most of it making the hard ground very slippery on top. However Bradbourne Red (Janet Phillips on Silvern Conetta, Lynn Bright on Max, Carole Cook on Budding Annie and Marisa Turner on Danny’s Limerick) were one of two teams to finish on a zero score. Unfortunately they just failed to qualify for the finals at Lincoln by finishing 2nd. Things might have been different if Carole hadn’t had to withdraw from the jump off when Annie went lame. And in a large jump-off, Janet was placed 2nd individually.
Also finishing 4th was Bradbourne Blue (Philippa Howe on Noble, Anna Lhermette on McCoy and Sally Maltby on Whisky Mac). This was an excellent result as one member unfortunately was unable to compete so they were down to three members with all scores needing to count. Philippa and Anna jumped double clears and Sally had 4 faults in the first round – on a horse lent to her for the day by Julia Van Den Berg.
The other Bradbourne team (Annie Etherington on Jasmine, Roz Buckfield on Guiness, Gill Cuffley on Naomi and Carole Cook on Finnigan) were just outside the placings.
Also well done to the Style team who were placed 3rd. (Carole on Finn, Roz, Phillipa and Marisa).
Many thanks to Pauline, Richard, Clare Heston and Anne-Marie Harper who kept everyone under control in the collecting ring. They were there all day in the most abysmal conditions.
Horse Trials – Borde Hill – June 2008
Bradbourne had two senior teams entered for the horse trials. The weather was much kinder than last year and was a hot and sunny day.
Bradbourne Red (Janet Phillips on Silvern Conetta, Lynn Bright on Murphy, Roz Buckfield on Guiness and Marisa Turner on Danny’s Limerick) were placed 4th. Janet was 3rd individually in her arena and Lynn was 4th in hers and will be going to the finals as an individual in August at Offchurch.
Bradbourne Blue (Carole Cook on Finnigan, Gill Cuffley on Naomi, Madeleine Kasch on Priceless and Philippa Howe on Noble) all completed. Many thanks to Philippa for letting Maddy use Priceless when her own horse was unable to compete. Also thanks to the helpers who fence judged and stewarded throughout the day.
Dressage and Riding Test – Maresfield – June 2008
Although the Bradbourne teams were not placed, Lorraine Morgan on Paddy had a super result by winning the Prelim 13 in her arena. Marisa Turner ( Danny’s Limerick) was 6th in her arena also doing Prelim 13.
Festival of the Hunter – Aston-Le-Walls – May 2008
Carole Cook (Budding Annie) and Dick Robinson (Finnigan) represented the Club in the final of the Senior Cross Country Pairs competition. Although they finished with a clear round they were not placed - those who know Carole (who was the leader) will not be surprised to hear that that they were too fast. There is apparently no truth in the rumour Dick had no idea where he was going due to the tears in his eyes as the wind whipped past him.
April 6th 2008 - Equitation 1
Terry Ward, Mike Smith, Liz Drey-Brown and Jo Clement all passed their Equitation 1 exam. They all did very well and looked very smart.

November 2007 - Indoor Novice Show Jumping – Duckhurst

Bradbourne fielded two teams for the Indoor Qualifier.  The A team consisted of Carole Cook (Budding Annie), Roz Buckfield (Guiness), Marisa Turner (Danny’s Limerick) Janet Phillips (Silvern Conetta) and the B team Gill Cuffley (Naomi), Annie Etherington (Jasmine), Carole Cook (Finnigan) and new to the senior teams, Phillipa Howe.

After two rounds four teams were on double clears and that included both of Bradbourne’s teams.  A nail-biting jump off ended with the Bradbourne A team on a zero score but just pipped into second place by the smallest of margins.  Not far behind in third place (also with a zero score) was the Bradbourne B team.

Well done to all concerned on such a good result.

14th October 2007 – Area Hunter Trials at Lodge Farm, Matfield

Just a week after the London and South East Championships we were at Lodge Farm for the Area Hunter Trials. This was a qualifying competition for the Championships in 2008.
The Bradbourne team consisted of Janet Phillips on Silvern Conetta, Lynn Bright on Murphy, Roz Buckfield on Guinness and Marisa Turner on Danny’s Limerick. Carole Cook on the reliable Budding Annie represented the club as an individual.
All five had clear jumping rounds, with some taking the straight route over the fourth fence, a ditch/palisade which was giving riders cause for concern. Unfortunately time faults meant that Bradbourne finished second just 0.8 penalties behind the winning team. In addition, Marisa did well to finish third individually.
This year there was a new addition to the Hunter Trials – a pairs competition. Bradbourne entered two pairs, Carole partnered with Dick Robinson on Finnigan, and our other pair was Marisa partnered with Sally Maltby on My Amigo II.
Marisa and Sally had a good round and ended up placed third. Carole and Dick stormed round to end up the winners and thus qualifying for the championships next year.
Thanks to our Bradbourne volunteers who helped with organising and jump judging for us.

7th October 2007 - London and South East Championship at Coombelands, Pulborough.

Bradbourne took a Show Jumping team and a Horse Trials team to the Championships and although we had also qualified for the dressage we did not enter a team.  We were blessed with a lovely sunny day.  The venue was worth the long journey although it was still dark when most of us left home in the morning.

The Show Jumping team consisted of Carole Cook on Finnigan, Annie Etherington on Jasmine, Sally Maltby on My Amigo II, and Lynn Bright on Max.  All four team members jumped clear in the first round and we were one of three teams on a zero score.

More poles started to fall in the second round.  However we managed to get three more clears – although Annie gave us cause for concern when she decided to take the scenic route and turned left instead of right!  Some quick thinking meant she managed to rectify this without crossing her tracks.  Bradbourne were the only team out of twelve competing to finish on a zero score and won the competition without having to jump off.   In addition Sally was the individual winner and Lynn was fourth.

Eighteen teams took part in the Horse Trials.  Bradbourne were represented by Janet Phillips on Silvern Conetta, Lynn Bright on Murphy, Roz Buckfield on Guinness and Marisa Turner on Danny’s Limerick.

All four started well with respectable dressage scores.  Janet had an uncharacteristic pole down in the Show Jumping section with the rest of the team jumping clear.  All four team members then jumped clear over an interesting cross country course although Lynn and Janet had a few time penalties for being too fast.

Bradbourne ended up the team winners of the Horse Trials too with Janet, Lynn and Merisa all placed third and Roz placed fourth individually in their respective arenas.

And to top one of Bradbourne’s most successful days we also won the Natasha Trophy which is awarded to the overall winner.

Once again our thanks go to Gill for organising the Bradbourne teams so efficiently, and for always being there to support us even when she is not competing herself.  In addition thanks to Area 13 who organised the competition and all the volunteers who contributed to its smooth running.
